Soldiers

Mајor battles took place in and around Osadné during World War I. Soldiers fought and died here during the so-called Brusilov breakthrough in 1914 - 1915. The moat intense fighting took place during November 1915. General Lavr Georgijevič Kornilov disobeyed orders and attacked Humenné without authorization from his superiors. The Austro-Hungarian Honven division defended Humenné. Kornilov suffered a major defeat. He tried to retreat to the main Russian camp in Sanok with his division through Osadné on November 28th, 1914. In early 1915 the 8th Russian army to attack Vranov and Humenné. They were supposed to detain the enemy with only a few men between the river Visla and a town called Svidník. The 8th Russian army had to concentrate as many troops in the area of Medzilaborce, Lupkov and Sanok, and lead a decisive attack on Humenné from there. A front line was set north of the village on the ridge above the village Stoby - Skóry. The struggle for this area cost many lives of the soldiers. A number of these fallen soldiers are buried in Osadne. The fight for this region lasted for 5 months.

The Russian army lost the battle due to a lack of ammunition. The Army retreated to the lower portion of the road to Nižná Jablonka, in the area known as Poľana. During the years 1915-1917 a war cementary established. Most of the soldiers buried there were from the Austrian-Hugarian Army. At first, it was believed that about 3000 soldiers were buried there. In actuality, 544 soldiers were buried. In 1920 the remains of the earlier mentioned Russian soldiers were buried in the cementary as well. In 1933, the corpses were relocated into the crypt and cementary became non-existent. Today, there are 2498 soldiers buried in the village (the crypt and on the local cemetery). Interestingly, the famous Czech journalist writing in Germen, the furious reporter Egon Ervin Kisch, as a member of the Prague regiment spent a night between 12th and 13th February 1915 in Osadné.
